Description
Lavender Tang (Acanthurus nigrofuscus / Lavender Surgeonfish)
A hardy and active marine species, the Lavender Tang is known for its soft purple-grey body and constant grazing behaviour. It is an excellent algae grazer and a valuable addition to well-established marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with other robust species such as wrasses, clownfish, angelfish, and other tangs (in suitably large tanks). Can become territorial, especially toward similar-shaped surgeonfish.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Completely safe with corals and most invertebrates, and highly beneficial for algae control in reef systems.
Diet:
Herbivore – primarily feeds on marine algae. Provide a varied diet including algae sheets, spirulina flakes or pellets, and vegetable-based frozen foods. Feed 2–3 times daily for optimal health and coloration.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 350L
Care Level:
Easy to Moderate – very hardy once established, but requires a mature aquarium with stable water conditions and plenty of swimming space.
Top Tip:
Provide ample live rock for grazing and open swimming areas. Introducing multiple tangs requires careful planning and sufficient tank size to reduce territorial behaviour.
