Description
Jewel Tang (Zebrasoma gemmatum / Gem Tang)
A rare and highly prized marine species, the Jewel Tang—also known as the Gem Tang—is famous for its deep black body covered in bright white “jewel-like” spots and a contrasting yellow tail. A true showpiece fish, it is a standout addition to premium reef aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with other robust species such as tangs, angelfish, and wrasse. Can be territorial with other tangs, particularly similar-shaped species. Avoid very small or timid fish.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and invertebrates, making it ideal for reef systems.
Diet:
Herbivore – primarily feeds on marine algae. Provide a varied diet including algae sheets, spirulina flakes or pellets, and vegetable-based frozen foods. Feed multiple times daily for optimal health and colouration.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 500L
Care Level:
Moderate to Advanced – requires a mature aquarium with excellent water quality, stable parameters, and plenty of swimming space.
Top Tip:
Introduce carefully into established tanks, especially if other tangs are present. Providing plenty of grazing opportunities and a varied diet will help maintain its striking “jewel-like” appearance.
