Description
Jewel Puffer (Canthigaster solandri / Spotted Sharpnose Puffer)
The Jewel Puffer is a beautifully patterned sharpnose puffer, admired for its cream to golden body covered in vivid blue spots and intricate facial markings. Small, intelligent, and full of personality, this species is a favourite for marine aquarists looking for an active and engaging display fish.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with confident community species such as wrasses, clownfish, tangs, dwarf angelfish, and larger gobies. May nip the fins of slow-moving or long-finned fish and is best kept singly unless housed in a very large aquarium.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. Generally safe with corals but may nip at tube worms, small crustaceans, snails, and ornamental shrimp. Individual behaviour can vary, so monitoring is recommended in reef aquariums.
Diet:
Carnivore – requires a varied diet including mysis shrimp, krill, chopped mussel, clam, squid, and high-quality marine pellets. Offer hard-shelled foods such as cockle or mussel regularly to help naturally wear down its continuously growing beak. Feed 1–2 times daily.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 120L
Care Level:
Easy to Moderate – hardy and adaptable once established, requiring stable water conditions, good filtration, and plenty of rockwork for exploration and shelter.
Top Tip:
Include shell-on foods in its diet to maintain a healthy beak. The Jewel Puffer is naturally curious and benefits from a varied aquascape with caves and crevices to explore, helping to keep this intelligent fish stimulated.
