Jam Sandwich Goby (Amblygobius rainfordi / Rainford's Goby)

The Jam Sandwich Goby, more commonly known as Rainford's Goby, is a peaceful and attractive marine fish named for its distinctive cream body with vivid orange-red horizontal stripes. Constantly grazing over rockwork and substrate, it is a popular choice for mature reef aquariums.

Compatibility:
Peaceful. Excellent with clownfish, blennies, cardinalfish, fairy wrasses, gobies, and other non-aggressive reef fish. Best kept singly or as a compatible pair in larger aquariums.

Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Completely safe with corals and ornamental invertebrates. It spends its time grazing on algae and biofilm without disturbing corals.

Diet:
Omnivore – naturally feeds on filamentous algae, biofilm, detritus, and tiny benthic organisms. Supplement with enriched brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets. Feed 1–2 times daily, while ensuring plenty of natural grazing opportunities.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 24–27°C
  • Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Minimum Tank Size: 100L

Care Level:
Moderate – best suited to mature aquariums with stable water quality and a well-established supply of natural algae and microfauna. Newly established tanks often do not provide enough natural food.

Top Tip:
A mature aquarium with abundant live rock, biofilm, and filamentous algae is key to long-term success. This species spends much of the day grazing naturally, so supplement prepared foods with plenty of natural forage to keep it in peak condition.
