Description
Scorpio maurus (Large Clawed Scorpion)
Scorpio maurus, commonly known as the Large Clawed Scorpion, is a fascinating burrowing species admired for its powerful pincers and calm, defensive nature. Native to North Africa and the Middle East, this species is well known for its impressive digging behaviour and sturdy build. With its thick claws and classic scorpion appearance, it makes an excellent display animal for invertebrate enthusiasts.
Habitat
In the wild, Scorpio maurus inhabits dry deserts and scrublands, spending much of its life underground in self-made burrows.
- Enclosure: Terrestrial setup with plenty of floor space and deep substrate for burrowing
- Temperature: 24–30°C
- Humidity: Low to moderate (40–60%) with a slightly moist lower substrate layer
- Decor: Cork bark, rocks, and starter burrows can help encourage natural behaviour
Feeding
This species is an ambush predator that waits near its burrow entrance to capture prey.
- Diet: Crickets, roaches, locusts, mealworms, and other appropriately sized insects
-
Feeding frequency:
- Juveniles: 2–3 times per week
- Adults: 1–2 times per week
- Remove uneaten prey to avoid unnecessary stress
General Care
Scorpio maurus is a hardy species that thrives when given the opportunity to dig and establish secure burrows.
- Temperament: Calm, defensive, and more likely to use pincers than sting
- Handling: Not recommended due to stress and risk of stings
- Venom: Mild to moderate, but caution should always be used
- Lifespan: Around 5–8 years depending on sex and care
