Description
Hoplo Catfish – A Hardy and Unique Bottom Feeder for Your Aquarium
The Hoplo Catfish (Hypostomus plecostomus), often referred to as the Spotted Hoplo or Hoplosternum, is an intriguing and active bottom-dwelling catfish that brings both personality and efficiency to your freshwater tank. With its distinct, armored appearance, this hardy fish makes a fascinating addition to any peaceful community aquarium.
Native to South America, the Hoplo Catfish is instantly recognizable thanks to its unique, spotted pattern and tough, armored body. Its body is covered in bony plates, providing it with a natural defense against predators. Despite its tough exterior, the Hoplo Catfish is a calm and gentle fish, typically growing to around 4 to 5 inches, making it an excellent addition to aquariums of all sizes.
The Hoplo Catfish is primarily a scavenger and bottom feeder, helping to keep your tank clean by consuming uneaten food and detritus that settles on the substrate. This species is particularly beneficial in tanks with a lot of plant matter, as it is efficient at cleaning up leftover food without harming plants or decorations. Its peaceful, social nature makes it a fantastic choice for community tanks, as it coexists well with a wide range of species.

-
Peaceful & Social: A calm, non-aggressive fish that thrives in groups, ideal for peaceful community aquariums
-
Efficient Scavenger: Helps keep the substrate clean by consuming uneaten food, detritus, and organic waste
-
Hardy & Resilient: Known for its adaptability to a range of water conditions, making it a great choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists
Care Guidelines:
-
Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons for one individual; larger groups will need a bigger tank
-
Water Temp: 72–80°F (22–27°C)
-
pH Range: 6.5–7.5
-
Diet: Omnivorous – enjoys sinking pellets, algae wafers, live or frozen foods (such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia), and plant matter like blanched zucchini or spinach
-
Lifespan: 5–7 years with proper care
Tip: Since the Hoplo Catfish is a bottom-dweller, make sure your tank has a smooth substrate, like fine gravel or sand, to prevent any damage to its sensitive barbels. It also enjoys plenty of hiding spots, so incorporating plants, rocks, and caves will help it feel more secure and provide natural foraging opportunities.
With its unique appearance, friendly nature, and excellent cleaning abilities, the Hoplo Catfish is a standout addition to any freshwater aquarium. Its ability to maintain a clean substrate while adding an interesting dynamic to your tank makes it a perfect companion for a variety of fish species. Whether you're new to fishkeeping or an experienced hobbyist, the Hoplo Catfish will quickly become a favorite in your aquatic community.
