Description
Marine Hermit Crab (Paguroidea spp. / Hermit Crab)
Marine Hermit Crabs are among the most popular members of a reef aquarium clean-up crew. Constantly scavenging across the rockwork and substrate, they help control nuisance algae, consume leftover food, and remove detritus. Their active behaviour and entertaining personalities make them a favourite in both nano and large reef aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Compatible with most reef fish, corals, and ornamental invertebrates. May occasionally compete with other hermit crabs or snails for shells if suitable empty shells are not available.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Excellent for reef aquariums, helping to control algae and organic waste without harming corals. Individual crabs may occasionally disturb loose frags while climbing.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on nuisance algae, detritus, uneaten food, biofilm, and decaying organic matter. Supplement with algae wafers, marine pellets, dried seaweed, and occasional meaty foods if natural food becomes limited.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 30L
Care Level:
Easy – hardy, adaptable, and suitable for both beginner and experienced marine aquarists.
Top Tip:
Always provide a selection of empty shells in various sizes. This allows hermit crabs to upgrade their shells as they grow and greatly reduces the chance of them targeting snails or other hermit crabs for a new home.
