Description
Heniochus Butterflyfish (Heniochus acuminatus / Bannerfish)
A graceful and eye-catching marine species, the Heniochus Butterflyfish—often called the Bannerfish—is known for its bold black and white bands, bright yellow highlights, and long flowing dorsal filament. Its elegant swimming and schooling nature make it a standout addition to larger marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Best kept with other non-aggressive or moderately robust species such as tangs, wrasses, clownfish, and angelfish. Can be kept singly or in small groups if the tank is large enough. Avoid aggressive tankmates.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. May nip at soft corals, LPS corals, and sessile invertebrates. Best suited for fish-only systems or carefully monitored reef tanks.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on a mix of small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, along with algae-based foods. Will readily accept high-quality marine pellets or flakes. Feed 2–3 times daily.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 300L
Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once acclimated, but benefits from a mature aquarium with stable water conditions and plenty of swimming space.
Top Tip:
Provide open swimming areas combined with live rock for shelter. Keeping in pairs or small groups can encourage natural schooling behaviour and reduce stress in larger aquariums.
