Halloween Hermit Crab (Ciliopagurus strigatus / Halloween Hermit Crab)
One of the most colourful and popular marine clean-up crew members, the Halloween Hermit Crab is instantly recognisable by its bright orange legs with black banding. Active, hardy, and highly effective at consuming algae and detritus, it is a fantastic addition to reef aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Compatible with most reef fish, corals, and invertebrates. Like all hermit crabs, it may compete with other hermits for shells and can occasionally target snails if suitable spare shells are not available.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Excellent for reef aquariums and helps control algae, uneaten food, and detritus without harming corals.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on nuisance algae, detritus, uneaten food, and organic matter. Will also accept algae wafers, marine pellets, and occasional meaty foods.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 60L
Care Level:
Easy – hardy, adaptable, and suitable for both beginner and experienced marine aquarists.
Top Tip:
Provide a selection of empty shells of varying sizes within the aquarium. This helps prevent shell disputes and reduces the likelihood of the crab targeting snails for their shells.
