Description
Guianacara geayi – The Elegant “True Bandit” of South America
The Guianacara geayi, often referred to as the Geayi Cichlid or True Bandit Cichlid, is a graceful and peaceful South American species prized for its unique appearance and calm temperament. Native to the soft, flowing rivers of French Guiana and Suriname, this rare cichlid features a soft golden-tan body, shimmering silver highlights, and a distinctive black vertical stripe running through the eye—giving it a masked or “bandit” look.
Unlike many other cichlids, Guianacara geayi are community-friendly and thrive in planted aquariums with clean, well-oxygenated water. They exhibit fascinating social behaviors and do best in small groups, making them an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a peaceful and visually appealing addition to a South American biotope or community setup.
Key Features:
-
Coloration: Subtle golden-beige body with silver sheen and bold black facial stripe
-
Temperament: Peaceful and social—best kept in small groups
-
Size: Typically grows up to 4–5 inches
-
