Description

Guatemalan Tiger Rump Tarantula (Davus pentaloris)

The Guatemalan Tiger Rump Tarantula is a beautifully patterned and highly active New World species, well-known for its striking black body with bold orange “tiger stripe” markings on the abdomen. Compact, hardy, and fascinating to watch, this species is a popular choice for both beginners and experienced keepers alike.

Habitat

Native to the dry forests and scrublands of Guatemala, Davus pentaloris thrives in a warm, slightly humid terrestrial setup with opportunities to burrow and web.

  • Enclosure: Terrestrial with good floor space
  • Substrate: 5–10cm of coco fibre or soil mix
  • Temperature: 24–28°C
  • Humidity: Moderate (60–70%), allow slight drying between misting
  • Decor: Cork bark, hides, and anchor points for webbing

Feeding

An active and reliable feeder, this species eagerly hunts down live prey and is great to observe during feeding.

  • Diet: Crickets, roaches, small locusts, and other insects
  • Feeding frequency:
    • Spiderlings/Juveniles: 2–3 times per week
    • Adults: 1–2 times per week
  • Remove uneaten prey to maintain enclosure hygiene

General Care

Hardy and relatively easy to care for, Davus pentaloris is an excellent introduction to tarantula keeping.

  • Temperament: Generally calm but can be skittish and may flick urticating hairs
  • Handling: Not recommended, but less defensive than many species
  • Lifespan:
    • Females: 10–12 years
    • Males: 3–4 years
  • Maintenance: Keep substrate slightly moist but never waterlogged
