Goldrim Powder Grey Tang (Acanthurus nigricans / Goldrim Tang / Whitecheek Surgeonfish)
The Goldrim Powder Grey Tang is one of the most elegant surgeonfish in the marine hobby, recognised by its velvety charcoal-grey body, crisp white cheek patch, bold black face, and distinctive golden-yellow edging along the dorsal and anal fins. An active swimmer and excellent algae grazer, it makes a stunning centrepiece for large marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with other robust marine species such as wrasses, angelfish, butterflyfish, and clownfish. Can be territorial towards other tangs, particularly species of a similar shape or colour. Introduce with care in larger aquariums.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Completely safe with corals and most ornamental invertebrates. An excellent natural algae grazer, making it highly beneficial in reef aquariums.
Diet:
Herbivore – primarily feeds on marine algae. Offer a varied diet including dried nori, spirulina-based pellets and flakes, marine algae, and vegetable-based frozen foods. Supplement with occasional meaty foods such as mysis shrimp. Feed 2–3 times daily.

- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 500L
Care Level:
Moderate to Advanced – requires a mature aquarium with excellent water quality, high oxygen levels, strong water movement, and plenty of open swimming space. Like many Acanthurus tangs, it can be susceptible to marine ich if stressed.

Provide a constant supply of algae-based foods and maintain pristine water quality to support its immune system. Introducing the Goldrim Powder Grey Tang as one of the last fish in the aquarium can help reduce territorial disputes with other surgeonfish.
