Gold Severum (Heros sp. "Gold") – A Majestic Jewel for Your Aquarium

The Gold Severum (Heros sp. "Gold") is a stunning and vibrant freshwater cichlid that will captivate your attention with its dazzling golden-yellow coloration. This fish is a true gem in the aquarium world, known for its striking beauty, peaceful temperament, and regal presence. Native to the slow-moving rivers of South America, the Gold Severum thrives in well-maintained aquariums where it can display its impressive size and gorgeous golden hue.

Characterized by its peaceful nature, the Gold Severum is one of the more mild-mannered cichlids, making it an ideal choice for community tanks, especially with other similarly sized or semi-aggressive species. Its calm demeanor and social behavior allow it to coexist harmoniously with a variety of fish, making it an excellent centerpiece in a diverse freshwater setup.

Key Features & Care Guidelines:

  • Brilliant Gold Coloration: The Gold Severum is most notable for its radiant golden-yellow body, which often features a subtle shimmer when exposed to aquarium lights. This rich coloration can intensify with optimal care and a healthy diet, providing a warm glow in your tank.

  • Behavior: Peaceful and relatively calm for a cichlid, the Gold Severum is less aggressive compared to other cichlid species. It is best kept with other peaceful or semi-aggressive fish. The Gold Severum enjoys the company of its own species and can often be seen interacting with its environment or swimming near its tankmates.

  • Tank Size: Minimum 55 gallons for a single Gold Severum is recommended, though larger tanks (75+ gallons) are ideal to give them ample space to swim and explore. A spacious tank allows the Gold Severum to showcase its beautiful colors and large size comfortably.

  • Water Parameters: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5, and temperatures between 74°F to 80°F (23°C to 27°C). Good filtration and gentle water flow are essential to maintain their health and vibrant colors.

  • Diet: Omnivorous; accepts a wide variety of foods including high-quality pellets, flakes, and live or frozen options like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. A diverse diet will support their growth and enhance their beautiful golden hues.

  • Tank Setup: Prefers aquariums with plenty of plants, rocks, and driftwood to mimic its natural environment. Providing hiding spots while also allowing open swimming areas will create a balanced habitat for the Gold Severum.

  • Experience Level: Although not as demanding as some other cichlids, the Gold Severum is best suited for intermediate aquarists who are familiar with caring for cichlids. Its peaceful nature, however, makes it a great addition to a community tank when housed with compatible species.

The Gold Severum (Heros sp. "Gold") is more than just a beautiful fish—it’s a regal presence in your aquarium. With its glowing golden body and serene demeanor, it brings both color and tranquility to your aquatic world. Whether gliding gracefully through the water or interacting with its tankmates, this striking cichlid makes an excellent addition to any freshwater aquarium.
