Australian Giant Rainforest Mantis (Hierodula majuscula)

The Australian Giant Rainforest Mantis is one of the largest and most impressive praying mantis species available in the hobby. Native to the tropical rainforests of northern Australia, this striking mantis is known for its vibrant green colouration, powerful hunting ability, and calm yet inquisitive nature. Active during the day and an exceptional ambush predator, it makes a fantastic display species for keepers of all experience levels.

Habitat

Hierodula majuscula thrives in warm, humid environments with plenty of vertical space for climbing and successful moulting.

  • Enclosure: Tall, well-ventilated enclosure with ample climbing height
  • Temperature: 24–30°C
  • Humidity: Moderate to high (60–80%)
  • Decor: Twigs, branches, live or artificial plants, and elevated perches for moulting

Feeding

A voracious predator, this mantis will readily hunt a wide variety of live insects.

  • Diet: Fruit flies (for young nymphs), crickets, green bottle flies, roaches, locusts, and other appropriately sized insects
  • Feeding frequency:
    • Nymphs: Every 1–2 days
    • Adults: 2–3 times per week
  • Remove uneaten prey, particularly during moulting periods

General Care

This hardy species is fast-growing and relatively easy to keep, making it suitable for beginners and experienced keepers alike.

  • Temperament: Alert, active, and generally calm
  • Handling: Can be handled gently, although it is best appreciated as a display animal
  • Lifespan: Around 10–14 months depending on sex and care
  • Maintenance: Provide good ventilation, regular light misting, and sufficient height for successful moulting
