Heusii Stick Insect (Phryganistria heusii yentuensis)
The Heusii Stick Insect is one of the longest stick insect species in the world, admired for its extraordinary size and incredible twig-like camouflage. Native to the forests of Vietnam, this impressive species is peaceful, easy to observe, and makes a spectacular display insect for both beginner and experienced keepers.
Habitat
Phryganistria heusii yentuensis thrives in a warm, humid environment with plenty of vertical space for climbing and successful moulting.
- Enclosure: Tall, well-ventilated enclosure with ample climbing height
- Temperature: 22–28°C
- Humidity: Moderate to high (60–80%)
- Decor: Branches, twigs, and leafy foliage to provide climbing surfaces and natural camouflage
Feeding
This species is herbivorous and feeds on a variety of fresh browse.
- Diet: Bramble, oak, rose, raspberry, and other suitable food plants
- Feeding frequency: Fresh foliage should be available at all times and replaced regularly
- Light misting provides drinking water from the leaves
General Care
The Heusii Stick Insect is a hardy species that requires minimal maintenance once its environmental needs are met.
- Temperament: Calm, gentle, and slow-moving
- Handling: Can be handled carefully, but should be disturbed as little as possible, particularly during moulting
- Lifespan: Around 12–18 months depending on sex and care
- Maintenance: Maintain good ventilation, regular misting, and sufficient enclosure height for successful moults
