African Bullfrog (Pyxicephalus adspersus)

The African Bullfrog, also known as the Pixie Frog, is one of the largest and most impressive frog species available in the hobby. Known for its bold personality, powerful build, and huge appetite, this species is a true centrepiece for any amphibian enthusiast. With proper care, they become hardy, long-lived pets with loads of character.

Habitat

Native to the savannas and grasslands of sub-Saharan Africa, African Bullfrogs require a semi-aquatic setup that mimics seasonal wet and dry conditions.

  • Enclosure: Large terrestrial enclosure with a water area (minimum 90cm+ for adults)
  • Substrate: Deep, moisture-retaining substrate such as coco fibre or soil mix (for burrowing)
  • Temperature: 24–30°C
  • Humidity: Moderate (60–80%)
  • Water: Shallow but large water dish for soaking (must be dechlorinated)
  • Decor: Minimal but sturdy—these frogs are powerful diggers

Feeding

Famous for their huge appetite, African Bullfrogs are opportunistic predators and will eat a wide variety of prey.

  • Diet: Crickets, locusts, worms, roaches, and occasional treats like mice (for adults only)
  • Feeding frequency:
    • Juveniles: Daily or every other day
    • Adults: 2–3 times per week
  • Dust food with calcium and vitamin supplements regularly

General Care

This species is hardy but requires respect due to its size and feeding response.

  • Temperament: Aggressive feeders; can bite if provoked
  • Handling: Minimal—best kept as a display animal
  • Lifespan: 15–20+ years with proper care
  • Maintenance: Spot clean regularly and maintain clean water to prevent bacterial issues

Order anything from our in-store range and have it delivered right to you.

Distances are measured “as the crow flies”, not by road.

Once your order is placed, we’ll be in touch to arrange a suitable delivery date and time.
Please note, delivery may take a little longer as we often group orders together to build an efficient delivery run.

Important: If you’re ordering a large aquarium, please ensure someone is available to help unload the van on arrival.
