Description
Gem Tang (Zebrasoma gemmatum)
One of the most sought-after and luxurious marine species in the hobby, the Gem Tang is instantly recognisable by its deep black body covered in stunning white “gem-like” spots and a contrasting yellow tail. A true showpiece fish, it adds elegance and rarity to high-end reef aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with other robust species such as tangs, angelfish, and wrasse. Can be territorial with other tangs, especially similar-shaped species. Avoid small or timid fish that may be stressed.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and invertebrates, making it ideal for reef setups.
Diet:
Herbivore – primarily feeds on marine algae. Offer a varied diet of algae sheets, spirulina flakes or pellets, and occasional vegetable-based frozen foods. Multiple feedings per day help maintain health and vibrant condition.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 500L
Care Level:
Moderate to Advanced – requires a mature aquarium with stable water conditions, plenty of swimming space, and high water quality.
Top Tip:
Provide ample live rock for grazing and introduce carefully to reduce territorial disputes with other tangs. A varied, algae-rich diet is key to maintaining its striking appearance and long-term health.
