Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish (Dendrochirus brachypterus / Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish)
A compact and highly charismatic predator, the Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish is known for its fluffy-looking fin rays, bold patterns, and slow, graceful movements. Smaller than many lionfish species, it is a popular choice for marine aquarists wanting an exotic centrepiece fish without the extreme size requirements of larger lionfish.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive to predatory. Best kept with moderately robust species too large to be considered prey, such as tangs, larger wrasses, angelfish, and triggerfish. Avoid very small fish and ornamental shrimp, which may be eaten.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. Harmless to corals, but will prey on small fish, shrimp, and crustaceans. Best suited to fish-only or carefully planned mixed systems.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, lancefish, silversides, and chopped seafood. Many specimens can be trained onto frozen foods. Feed 2–3 times weekly once established.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 150L
Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once feeding consistently, but requires stable water conditions and careful feeding management. Venomous spines require cautious handling.
Top Tip:
Provide caves and shaded rockwork for resting areas. Use feeding tools when target feeding and always exercise caution around the venomous dorsal spines during maintenance.
