Description
Foxface Rabbitfish (Siganus vulpinus / Foxface Lo)
The Foxface Rabbitfish is a striking and highly popular marine fish, instantly recognisable by its vibrant yellow body, contrasting black and white facial markings and distinctive fox-like snout. Known for its peaceful temperament and excellent algae-grazing abilities, the Foxface makes a fantastic addition to larger marine and reef aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Generally compatible with clownfish, tangs, angelfish, wrasses, butterflyfish and other community marine species. Usually peaceful towards unrelated fish, although it may show territorial behaviour towards other rabbitfish, particularly in smaller aquariums.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. Generally leaves healthy corals and ornamental invertebrates alone when well fed, although some individuals may occasionally nip at soft corals, LPS corals or other sessile invertebrates. An excellent natural grazer that can help control various nuisance algae.
Diet:
Herbivore – primarily feeds on marine algae and plant material. Offer dried nori, spirulina-based flakes, quality herbivore pellets and vegetable-rich frozen foods. Will also accept mysis shrimp and other marine preparations. Feed 2–3 times daily, with regular access to grazing foods.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 24–27°C
-
Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
-
pH: 8.1–8.4
-
Minimum Tank Size: 400L
Care Level:
Easy to Moderate – generally hardy, adaptable and an enthusiastic feeder once established. Requires stable water conditions, good filtration and plenty of open swimming space alongside established rockwork for grazing.
Top Tip:
Foxface Rabbitfish possess venomous dorsal and anal fin spines, which they use for defence when threatened. Although generally peaceful, they should always be handled carefully during aquarium maintenance or transportation. When frightened or resting, they may also temporarily develop mottled brown colouration, which is a natural camouflage response.
