Description
Four Stripe Humbug (Dascyllus melanurus / Blacktail Damselfish)
The Four Stripe Humbug is a bold and distinctive marine damselfish, instantly recognisable by its bright white body crossed by four contrasting black vertical bands. Hardy, active, and full of character, it is an attractive addition to marine aquariums, although its increasingly territorial nature should be considered when choosing tankmates.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with confident marine species such as clownfish, wrasses, dwarf angelfish, tangs, and other robust damselfish. Juveniles can appear relatively peaceful, but individuals often become increasingly territorial as they mature.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Safe with corals and most ornamental invertebrates, making it suitable for reef aquariums with appropriately chosen fish.
Diet:
Omnivore – readily accepts marine flakes, pellets, mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and algae-based foods. Feed 1–2 times daily with a varied diet.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 100L
Care Level:
Easy – extremely hardy, adaptable, and readily accepts prepared foods, making it suitable for aquarists of all experience levels.
Top Tip:
Provide plenty of rockwork with caves and clearly defined territories. If keeping multiple damsels, a larger aquarium with numerous hiding places will help spread aggression. Adding the Four Stripe Humbug later in the stocking order can also help prevent it from becoming overly dominant.
