Description
Siamese Flying Fox (Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus)
The Siamese Flying Fox is a lively and hardworking freshwater fish, best known for its excellent algae-eating abilities and striking appearance. With a sleek golden-brown body, bold black horizontal stripe, and elegant clear fins edged in black and white, this fish is both attractive and practical in the aquarium.
Growing up to 5–6 inches (12–15 cm), the Siamese Flying Fox is larger than many algae eaters and thrives in aquariums of 100 litres or more. They are active swimmers that patrol all areas of the tank, helping to keep algae under control.
🌿 Behaviour & Temperament:
-
Active and curious, often seen exploring plants, rocks, and driftwood.
-
Generally peaceful but can become territorial with age, especially towards similar species.
-
Best kept singly or in small groups with plenty of space to reduce squabbles.
🍴 Diet:
While renowned as an algae grazer, the Siamese Flying Fox also accepts a variety of foods, including sinking pellets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and occasional frozen/live foods for variety. A balanced diet ensures vibrant colours and good health.
