Description
Flame Angelfish (Centropyge loricula)
One of the most iconic dwarf marine angelfish, the Flame Angel is renowned for its intense red-orange body highlighted by bold vertical black bars and electric blue accents. A true showstopper, this species brings both colour and character to any saltwater aquarium.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with similarly robust species such as tangs, wrasse, clownfish, and larger gobies. Can be territorial, especially towards other dwarf angelfish, so it’s recommended to keep only one per tank unless the system is large.
Reef Compatibility:
With caution. While often kept in reef tanks, some individuals may nip at soft corals, LPS, and clam mantles.
Diet:
Omnivore – requires a varied and balanced diet. Feed high-quality marine pellets and flakes, alongside frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and algae-based foods such as spirulina. Sponge-based angelfish foods are highly beneficial.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 120L
Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once established but benefits from stable water conditions and a mature aquarium with plenty of live rock.
Top Tip:
Provide plenty of rockwork for grazing and shelter. A well-fed Flame Angel is less likely to nip at corals and will display its best colours.
