Description
Flagfin Angelfish (Apolemichthys trimaculatus / Flagfin Angel)
A stunning and highly sought-after marine angelfish, the Flagfin Angel is recognised by its vibrant golden-yellow body, electric blue lips, and distinctive black spot near the dorsal fin. Its striking colours and graceful swimming behaviour make it a true centrepiece fish for larger marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with other moderately robust species such as tangs, wrasses, butterflyfish, and larger clownfish. Can become territorial toward other angelfish, particularly in smaller aquariums.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. May nip at soft corals, LPS corals, zoanthids, and clam mantles. Best suited to fish-only systems or carefully monitored mixed reefs.
Diet:
Omnivore – requires a varied diet including sponge-based angelfish foods, marine algae, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feed 2–3 times daily to maintain health and vibrant coloration.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 400L
Care Level:
Moderate to Advanced – requires a mature aquarium with stable water conditions, excellent water quality, and plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. Some specimens can be shy during initial acclimation.
Top Tip:
Provide plenty of caves and overhangs where the fish can retreat when settling in. Offering sponge-based foods from the outset greatly improves long-term success and helps maintain vibrant colouration.
