Description
Fireball Angelfish (Centropyge acanthops)
Also known as the African Flameback Angelfish, the Fireball Angel is a stunning dwarf species prized for its intense fiery orange body contrasted with a deep electric blue back. Compact, colourful, and full of personality, this species is an excellent choice for adding vibrant energy to a marine aquarium.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best suited to community tanks with similarly sized and robust fish such as wrasse, tangs, clownfish, and gobies. Can be territorial, particularly towards other dwarf angelfish, so only one should be kept unless the tank is large and well-established.
Reef Compatibility:
With caution. May nip at soft corals, LPS, and clam mantles, though many individuals behave well in reef systems.
Diet:
Omnivore – thrives on a varied diet including marine flakes and pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and algae-based foods such as spirulina. Sponge-based angelfish foods are recommended for optimal health.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 120L
Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once established but requires stable water conditions and plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter.
Top Tip:
Introduce into a mature aquarium with plenty of hiding spots to reduce stress and aggression, and feed a varied diet to maintain its vibrant colouration.
