Description
Fire Shrimp (Lysmata debelius / Scarlet Skunk Cleaner Shrimp)
A striking and highly sought-after marine invertebrate, the Fire Shrimp is instantly recognisable by its vibrant red body, white dorsal stripe, and long, elegant antennae. Known for its active behaviour and cleaning abilities, it is both functional and visually stunning in reef aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Can be kept with most fish species, including tangs, wrasses, and clownfish. Avoid large, aggressive predators that may view the shrimp as prey.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and other invertebrates. Enhances the natural ecosystem of a reef tank by cleaning fish and feeding on detritus.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on leftover meaty foods, biofilm, and detritus. Will also accept finely chopped seafood, mysis shrimp, and commercial shrimp pellets. Feed 1–2 times daily if natural food sources are insufficient.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 60L
Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once acclimated but requires stable water conditions and hiding spaces among live rock or coral branches.
Top Tip:
Provide plenty of rock crevices or coral branches for shelter. Their bright coloration and active cleaning behaviour make them a captivating and useful addition to any reef aquarium.
