Description
Fiji Foxface Rabbitfish (Siganus uspi / Bicolour Foxface)
The Fiji Foxface Rabbitfish is a spectacular and distinctive marine fish, recognised for its striking combination of deep chocolate-brown and vibrant yellow colouration. Native to the waters around Fiji, this beautiful rabbitfish is highly sought after for its unusual appearance, peaceful personality and natural algae-grazing behaviour. An excellent addition to larger marine and reef aquariums, it offers both visual appeal and practical algae control.
Compatibility:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Generally compatible with clownfish, tangs, angelfish, wrasses, butterflyfish and other community marine species. Usually peaceful towards unrelated fish but may become territorial towards other rabbitfish, particularly in smaller aquariums.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. Generally leaves healthy corals and ornamental invertebrates alone when well fed, although some individuals may occasionally nip at soft corals, LPS corals and other sessile invertebrates. Its natural grazing behaviour makes it useful for controlling certain nuisance algae.
Diet:
Herbivore – primarily feeds on marine algae and other plant material. Offer dried nori, spirulina-based flakes, quality herbivore pellets and vegetable-rich frozen foods. Will also accept mysis shrimp and other marine preparations. Feed 2–3 times daily, with regular access to grazing foods.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 24–27°C
-
Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
-
pH: 8.1–8.4
-
Minimum Tank Size: 400L
Care Level:
Easy to Moderate – generally hardy and adaptable once established but requires excellent water quality, good filtration, plenty of swimming space and established rockwork for grazing.
Top Tip:
Like other rabbitfish, the Fiji Foxface possesses venomous dorsal and anal fin spines used for defence. Always take care when handling or moving this species. When frightened or resting, it may temporarily develop darker or mottled camouflage colouration, which is a normal defensive response.
