With its elegant shape and vivid blue, green, and yellow hues, the Empire Gudgeon is sure to become the centerpiece of your aquarium.

Key Features:

  • Vivid Coloration: The Empire Gudgeon features beautiful shades of blue, green, and yellow, with males often displaying even more intense colors during breeding season

  • Hardy: Adaptable to a variety of water conditions, making it an ideal choice for both beginner and intermediate hobbyists

  • Energetic: Active and curious, this species will entertain you with its swimming behavior, often seen exploring tank décor and interacting with tankmates

Tank Requirements:

  • Minimum tank size: 100 liters (26 gallons) for a small group

  • Temperature: 22°C–28°C (72°F–82°F)

  • pH: 6.5–7.5 (neutral to slightly acidic)

  • Prefers a tank with soft to medium substrate, like fine gravel or sand

  • Moderate water flow is ideal to mimic the gentle rivers and streams of its native Australian habitat

  • Plenty of hiding spots using plants, driftwood, and rocks will help provide a sense of security for the fish

Compatibility:

  • Peaceful Nature: The Empire Gudgeon is a gentle species that gets along well with other peaceful freshwater fish

  • Ideal tankmates include small tetras, rasboras, corydoras catfish, and peaceful livebearers

  • Can be kept in small groups of 4–6 individuals, as they thrive in the company of their own kind

  • Avoid keeping with larger or aggressive fish, as they may stress the gentle Empire Gudgeon

  • Can also be kept with freshwater shrimp and small snails, but be cautious as it may occasionally nip at smaller inverts

Feeding Tips:

  • Omnivorous—feeds on a wide variety of foods, including both plant matter and small invertebrates

  • Will readily accept high-quality flakes, pellets, and sinking wafers

  • Enjoys live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms
