Description
Emperor Angelfish (Pomacanthus imperator / Emperor Angel)
One of the most iconic and spectacular marine angelfish, the Emperor Angelfish is renowned for its dramatic transformation from the striking blue-and-white juvenile pattern to the vibrant yellow, blue, and black adult coloration. A true showpiece species, it commands attention in any large marine aquarium.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with other robust species such as tangs, larger wrasses, triggerfish, butterflyfish, and angelfish in suitably large aquariums. Can become territorial as it matures, particularly toward other angelfish.
Reef Compatibility:
Not reef-safe. Known to nip at soft corals, LPS corals, zoanthids, clam mantles, and other sessile invertebrates. Best suited to fish-only marine systems.
Diet:
Omnivore – requires a varied diet including sponge-based angelfish foods, marine algae, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, and finely chopped seafood. Feed 2–3 times daily for optimal health and coloration.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 500L
Care Level:
Moderate to Advanced – requires a large, mature aquarium with stable water conditions, excellent filtration, and plenty of swimming space alongside substantial rockwork.
Top Tip:
Provide a varied diet rich in sponge material and marine algae to support healthy growth and vibrant adult coloration. Plenty of caves and rock structures will help reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour.
