Description

Duckbill Catfish Ageneiosus Magoi – A Unique Bottom-Dweller with Charm

Introduce a one-of-a-kind bottom-dweller to your freshwater aquarium with the Duckbill Catfish Ageneiosus magoi. This fascinating species is renowned for its distinctive, duckbill-shaped snout, making it an instant conversation piece for aquarists. Native to the slow-moving rivers and floodplains of South America, this catfish offers a truly unique appearance and behavior that will add character and intrigue to your tank.

The Ageneiosus magoi is a peaceful and solitary fish, often found perching on the substrate or in caves. Though it is nocturnal and relatively shy, it can grow to a good size and does well in larger, peaceful community setups. As a scavenger, it is efficient at cleaning up uneaten food and debris from the bottom, helping to maintain a tidy tank environment. The Duckbill Catfish is also known for its calm, laid-back demeanor, making it a great companion for other non-aggressive species.

Key Features:

  • Unique Duckbill Snout: Characterized by its long, flattened snout that resembles a duck's bill, offering a fascinating and unique appearance

  • Peaceful and Non-Aggressive: Prefers a calm, peaceful environment, making it ideal for community tanks with other non-aggressive species

  • Efficient Scavenger: Helps maintain a clean substrate by foraging for uneaten food and organic debris

  • Ideal for Larger Aquariums: Due to its size and nocturnal nature, it thrives in larger tanks where it has ample space and hiding spots

Care Guidelines:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 50 gallons for one individual

  • Water Temp: 74–80°F (23–27°C)

  • pH Range: 6.5–7.5

  • Diet: Omnivorous – sinking pellets, live/frozen foods, and occasional vegetable matter

  • Lifespan: 6–8 years with proper care

Tip: Provide plenty of hiding spots such as caves, driftwood, or dense plants to mimic its natural habitat and offer security. A soft, sandy substrate is also ideal for protecting its sensitive barbels.

The Duckbill Catfish Ageneiosus magoi is a fascinating and peaceful addition to your aquarium, perfect for aquarists looking to add a unique, hardworking bottom-dweller to their setup. Its distinctive appearance and efficient scavenging behavior make it a standout in any peaceful, large tank.
