Description
Dot Dash Butterfly – Blue (Chaetodon punctatofasciatus / Spotband Butterflyfish)
A beautifully patterned marine butterflyfish, the Blue Dot Dash Butterfly is admired for its intricate network of blue-grey markings, fine dotted pattern, and elegant yellow accents. Active and graceful, it makes a stunning display fish for larger marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Best kept with other calm to moderately robust species such as tangs, wrasses, angelfish, and clownfish. May become territorial towards other butterflyfish in smaller aquariums.
Reef Compatibility:
Not reef-safe. May nip at soft corals, LPS corals, feather dusters, tube worms, and other sessile invertebrates. Best suited to fish-only or carefully monitored mixed marine aquariums.
Diet:
Omnivore – requires a varied diet including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, marine algae, sponge-based foods, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes. Feed 2–3 times daily to maintain health and vibrant colouration.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 350L
Care Level:
Moderate – requires a mature aquarium with stable water conditions, excellent filtration, and plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. Choose specimens that are already feeding well for the best chance of long-term success.
Top Tip:
Provide plenty of open swimming space alongside rockwork for security. A varied diet, including sponge-based foods, helps maintain this species in peak condition and encourages long-term health.
