Hush Puppy Dogface Puffer (Arothron nigropunctatus “Hush Puppy”)
A unique and eye-catching variant of the Dogface Puffer, the Hush Puppy Puffer is known for its distinctive mottled brown and cream coloration, giving it a charming “puppy-like” appearance. Highly interactive and curious, it adds personality and intrigue to larger marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with robust tankmates such as tangs, wrasses, and larger angelfish. Avoid small or slow-moving fish, as they may be harassed.
Reef Compatibility:
Not reef-safe. May nip at corals, invertebrates, or smaller tankmates. Best suited for fish-only community or species-specific tanks.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on mollusks, crustaceans, chopped seafood, and marine pellets. Hard-shelled foods help wear down their continuously growing teeth. Feed 1–2 times daily.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 300L
Care Level:
Moderate to Advanced – requires stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium. Regular feeding of varied foods is essential to maintain health and vibrant coloration.
Top Tip:
Provide ample hiding places and include hard-shelled foods to keep teeth healthy. Avoid housing with delicate or small fish to prevent stress and aggression.
