Description
Coloured Dogface Puffer (Arothron nigropunctatus / Coloured Puffer)
A striking and charismatic marine species, the Coloured Dogface Puffer is famous for its unique “dog-like” facial features and vibrant, varied body coloration. It is an active and curious fish that adds personality and intrigue to larger marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with robust species such as tangs, wrasses, and larger angelfish. Avoid small or slow-moving fish, as they may be harassed.
Reef Compatibility:
Not fully reef-safe. May nip at corals, invertebrates, or smaller tankmates. Best suited for fish-only reef or community tanks.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on a variety of foods including mollusks, crustaceans, chopped seafood, and marine pellets. Regular feeding of hard-shelled foods helps wear down their continuously growing teeth. Feed 1–2 times daily.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 300L
Care Level:
Moderate to Advanced – requires stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium. Regular feeding of varied foods is essential for health and coloration.
Top Tip:
Provide plenty of hiding spots and a mix of meaty foods, including hard-shelled items, to maintain dental health. Avoid housing with delicate or small fish.
