Description

Diamond Tetra (Moenkhausia pittieri) – A Sparkling Jewel for Your Aquarium

The Diamond Tetra (Moenkhausia pittieri) is a dazzling freshwater fish known for its striking, iridescent scales that sparkle like tiny diamonds in the light. With its shimmering silver body and vibrant red-orange fins, this species adds a touch of elegance and brilliance to any aquarium. The Diamond Tetra’s radiant appearance, combined with its peaceful demeanor and active schooling behavior, makes it a beloved addition to both beginner and experienced aquarists alike.

Native to the rivers of Venezuela, the Diamond Tetra thrives in well-planted aquariums with a steady flow of clean water. When kept in schools, the fish’s sparkling scales create a captivating, fluid display as they move gracefully together. This species’ adaptability and vibrant coloration make it a perfect choice for creating a lively, visually stunning freshwater community tank.

Key Features & Care Guidelines:

  • Brilliant Coloration: The Diamond Tetra features a shimmering silver body with a glowing iridescence, often described as "diamond-like." The bright red-orange coloring along the fins and tail adds further contrast and beauty.

  • Behavior: Peaceful and social; best kept in schools of 6 or more to reduce stress and encourage natural schooling behavior. These tetras are active swimmers and enjoy interacting with other fish in a community tank.

  • Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons recommended for a small school, though larger tanks provide more space for swimming and a healthier environment. A well-planted setup with open swimming areas is ideal for this species.

  • Water Parameters: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and temperatures from 74°F to 80°F (23°C to 27°C). A gentle water flow and good filtration help maintain their health and vibrancy.

  • Diet: Omnivorous; accepts a wide variety of foods including high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen offerings like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. A balanced diet is key to maintaining their radiant coloration.

  • Tank Setup: Ideal for well-planted aquariums with moderate lighting. Dense plant cover offers hiding spots, while open areas provide ample swimming space for this active species.

  • Experience Level: Hardy and adaptable, making the Diamond Tetra an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists. Its peaceful nature makes it suitable for community tanks with other non-aggressive species.

The Diamond Tetra (Moenkhausia pittieri) is a beautiful and lively addition to any freshwater aquarium. Its sparkling appearance, energetic behavior, and peaceful disposition make it a stunning centerpiece for community tanks. Whether swimming in schools or darting gracefully through plants, the Diamond Tetra will light up your aquarium like a shimmering jewel.
