Description

Tiger Datnoid – A Majestic Predator with Striking Patterning
(Datnioides microlepis)

The Tiger Datnoid (Datnioides microlepis) is a visually stunning and highly prized fish among aquarium enthusiasts. Known for its unique, tiger-like striping and predatory nature, the Tiger Datnoid is a freshwater species that commands attention in any large tank. Native to Southeast Asia, this fish is not only admired for its beauty but also for its dynamic and active behavior, making it a must-have for aquarists with larger, well-established tanks.

Key Features:

  • Stunning Stripes: Bold black and gold/yellow vertical stripes across its body give it a tiger-like appearance

  • Large Size: Can grow up to 30 cm (12 inches), requiring ample space to thrive

  • Active and Strong Swimmer: Known for its energetic swimming patterns and territorial behavior

  • Predatory Nature: Naturally carnivorous, preying on smaller fish and invertebrates in the wild, which makes it suitable for larger, fish-only setups

Tank Requirements:

  • Minimum tank size: 200 liters (50 gallons) for a single fish (larger tanks are preferable for multiple individuals)

  • Temperature: 24°C–30°C (75°F–86°F)

  • pH: 6.5–7.5 (neutral to slightly acidic)

  • Requires a well-filtered tank with strong water circulation and stable water conditions

  • Needs plenty of hiding spots and structures like rocks, driftwood, and plants to feel secure

  • A sandy or fine gravel substrate is ideal for this species

Compatibility:

  • Aggressive with Smaller Fish: Best kept with other large, robust fish that are capable of defending themselves

  • Ideal tankmates include large cichlids, other aggressive species like large catfish, and fast-moving fish

  • Avoid keeping with small or slow fish, as the Tiger Datnoid may consider them prey

  • Can be kept in pairs or small groups if the tank is large enough, but may show territorial behavior, especially during feeding time

Feeding Tips:

  • Carnivorous—feeds on live or frozen foods such as fish, shrimp, and larger invertebrates

  • Will also accept high-quality pellets and meaty frozen foods like bloodworms and krill

  • Feed 2–3 times a day in portions it can consume in a few minutes, adjusting based on its appetite

  • Larger specimens can also be trained to accept high-quality fish or shrimp pellets
