Copperband Butterflyfish (Chelmon rostratus / Copperband Butterfly)
A graceful and highly recognisable marine species, the Copperband Butterflyfish is famous for its elegant silver body, bright orange vertical bands, and long pointed snout. Its peaceful nature and unique appearance make it a prized addition to larger marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Best kept with other non-aggressive or moderately robust species such as clownfish, tangs, wrasses, and angelfish. Avoid highly aggressive tankmates that may outcompete it for food or cause stress.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. May help control pest aiptasia anemones, but can also nip at feather dusters, tube worms, small crustaceans, and some coral polyps. Best suited for carefully monitored reef systems.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, blackworms, and finely chopped seafood. Can be delicate feeders, so frequent small feedings are recommended. Feed 2–3 times daily.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 300L
Care Level:
Advanced – can be sensitive during acclimation and may be difficult to establish feeding. Requires a mature aquarium with stable water conditions and abundant live rock for natural foraging.
Top Tip:
Choose specimens that are already feeding well before purchase. Provide plenty of live rock and offer a variety of meaty foods to encourage strong feeding response and long-term success.
