Description
Convict Tang (Acanthurus triostegus / Convict Surgeonfish)
A hardy and active marine species, the Convict Tang is recognised by its pale body marked with multiple bold black vertical stripes, giving it a “convict uniform” appearance. It is an excellent algae grazer and a useful addition to larger marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Generally mixes well with other robust species such as wrasses, angelfish, and clownfish. Can be territorial with other tangs, especially in smaller tanks.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and invertebrates, making it suitable for reef systems.
Diet:
Herbivore – primarily feeds on marine algae. Provide a varied diet including algae sheets, spirulina flakes or pellets, and vegetable-based frozen foods. Feed 2–3 times daily for best health and activity.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 350L
Care Level:
Easy to Moderate – very hardy once established, but requires a mature aquarium with stable water conditions and plenty of swimming space.
Top Tip:
Provide ample live rock for grazing and open swimming areas. Best introduced into an established tank to reduce territorial behaviour and ensure smooth acclimation.
