Description

Congo Tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) – A Stunning Jewel of the Aquarium

The Congo Tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) is one of the most vibrant and stunning species in the aquarium hobby, known for its dazzling iridescent scales and graceful swimming movements. With its shimmering body that reflects hues of gold, green, blue, and purple, the Congo Tetra adds an otherworldly glow to any tank. Its slender, elongated body and flowing fins further contribute to its elegant and regal appearance, making it a true centerpiece of any aquarium.

Native to the Congo River Basin in Central Africa, this species thrives in groups and prefers slightly acidic, warm water with plenty of plant cover. Peaceful and hardy, the Congo Tetra is well-suited for community tanks with non-aggressive fish, where its sparkling beauty can be fully appreciated as it moves in a schooling formation.

Key Features & Care Guidelines:

  • Iridescent Coloration: The Congo Tetra’s body reflects a stunning array of colors, from gold and green to hints of blue and purple. The males, in particular, display even more vibrant coloration, with a noticeable red-orange tint on their fins.

  • Behavior: Peaceful, social schooling fish; best kept in schools of 6 or more to encourage natural schooling behavior and reduce stress. They are gentle and get along well with other non-aggressive species.

  • Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons recommended for a school of Congo Tetras, though larger tanks are ideal for a more dynamic display and a healthier environment.

  • Water Parameters: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and temperatures ranging from 74°F to 82°F (23°C to 28°C). A gentle water flow simulates their natural river environment.

  • Diet: Omnivorous; accepts a wide range of foods, including flakes, pellets, and live or frozen offerings such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.

  • Tank Setup: Ideal for well-planted aquariums with soft, dim lighting to enhance their iridescent colors. Moderate water flow and hiding spots will mimic their natural habitat, where they swim among vegetation. just beware they may nibble at plants!

  • Experience Level: Hardy and relatively easy to care for, making them a great choice for both beginners and more experienced aquarists.

The Congo Tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) is a spectacular addition to any aquarium, combining beauty, grace, and peacefulness. Its iridescent colors, elegant movements, and social nature will surely captivate anyone who views your aquarium. This tetra is a true gem in the aquatic world.
