Common Dogface Pufferfish (Arothron nigropunctatus)
A striking and highly intelligent marine species, the Common Dogface Pufferfish is instantly recognisable by its distinctive “dog-like” facial markings and charming personality. Known for its curious nature and ability to inflate when threatened, it is a fascinating centerpiece for large aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with robust tankmates such as large tangs, angelfish, and wrasse. Avoid small, slow-moving, or delicate species, as they may be nipped or stressed. Can be territorial if kept in confined spaces.
Reef Compatibility:
Not fully reef-safe. May nip at corals, invertebrates, and ornamental invertebrates. Best suited for fish-only or fish-plus-live-rock setups.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on a variety of meaty foods including shrimp, mussels, squid, clams, and high-quality marine pellets. Includes hard-shelled foods to help wear down continuously growing teeth. Feed 2–3 times per week in moderation to prevent overfeeding.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 600L
Care Level:
Advanced – requires a large, well-established aquarium with stable water parameters. Sensitive to water quality fluctuations and requires regular monitoring of teeth growth and diet.
Top Tip:
Provide plenty of open swimming space and hiding spots. Include hard-shelled foods such as snails and crustaceans to naturally maintain tooth length. Introduce into a mature tank to reduce stress and ensure a stable environment.
