Description
Clown Triggerfish (Balistoides conspicillum)
One of the most striking and dramatic marine species, the Clown Triggerfish is instantly recognisable for its bold black body, large white spots, bright yellow mouth, and intricate patterns. A true centerpiece fish, it adds colour, character, and movement to larger marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive to aggressive. Best kept with robust, similarly sized tankmates such as tangs, angelfish, and large wrasse. Avoid small, timid, or slow-moving fish, as they may become targets. Can be territorial, especially in confined spaces.
Reef Compatibility:
Not reef-safe. Known to nip at corals, invertebrates, and smaller fish. Suitable for fish-only or fish-plus-live-rock setups rather than full coral reefs.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on a wide range of meaty foods including chopped seafood, shrimp, squid, mussels, and high-quality marine pellets. Occasional live foods encourage natural hunting behaviour. Feed multiple times per week rather than daily, as they are slow grazers.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 600L
Care Level:
Advanced – requires a large, well-established aquarium with plenty of swimming space and hiding spots. Sensitive to water quality fluctuations.
Top Tip:
Introduce the Clown Triggerfish into the tank after it is well-established to reduce stress. Provide large open areas and caves for security, and monitor diet carefully to prevent overfeeding or aggression.
