Description
Cleaner Shrimp (Lysmata amboinensis / Pacific Cleaner Shrimp)
A highly beneficial and visually appealing marine invertebrate, the Cleaner Shrimp is known for its striking red and white coloration and its “cleaning” behaviour, removing parasites and dead tissue from fish. It is a favourite for both reef and community aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Can be kept with most fish species, as many will actively seek cleaning from the shrimp. Avoid housing with large aggressive predators that may eat the shrimp.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and other invertebrates. Provides a natural cleaning service for the tank’s inhabitants.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on leftover meaty foods, biofilm, and detritus. Can also accept finely chopped seafood, mysis shrimp, and commercial shrimp pellets. Feed 1–2 times daily if natural food sources are insufficient.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 60L
Care Level:
Easy – hardy once acclimated. Requires stable water conditions and some hiding spots among live rock.
Top Tip:
Provide plenty of rock crevices or coral branches for shelter. Observe their cleaning behaviour—it’s not only beneficial for the fish but also fascinating to watch.
