Description
Chalk Goby (Valenciennea sexguttata / Chalk Goby)
The Chalk Goby is a peaceful and hardworking sand-sifting goby, valued for its pale white body adorned with subtle blue spots and yellow highlights. Constantly filtering mouthfuls of sand through its gills, it helps keep the substrate clean and well-aerated, making it an excellent addition to mature reef aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Ideal with clownfish, gobies, blennies, wrasses, cardinalfish, tangs, and other non-aggressive community species. Best kept singly or as a bonded pair in larger aquariums.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Completely safe with corals and ornamental invertebrates. Its sand-sifting behaviour benefits the aquarium by reducing detritus buildup, although it may occasionally cover low-placed corals with sand.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on tiny crustaceans, worms, and other microfauna found within the substrate. Supplement with mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality sinking marine pellets. Feed 1–2 times daily.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 150L
Care Level:
Moderate – requires a mature aquarium with a deep, fine sand bed and stable water conditions. A well-established substrate rich in natural microfauna greatly improves long-term success.
Top Tip:
Provide a soft sand bed at least 5–7 cm deep to allow natural feeding behaviour. A secure lid is recommended, as Chalk Gobies can jump when startled.
