Yucatán Duck-Billed Frog (Triprion petasatus)

The Yucatán Duck-Billed Frog is a truly unique tree frog, instantly recognisable by its broad, flattened snout that gives it its distinctive "duck-billed" appearance. Native to the Yucatán Peninsula and parts of Central America, this nocturnal amphibian is an excellent climber and a fascinating display species for keepers looking for something unusual.

Habitat

In the wild, Yucatán Duck-Billed Frogs inhabit tropical forests, where they spend much of their time in trees and vegetation close to water sources.

  • Enclosure: Tall arboreal terrarium with plenty of climbing space
  • Temperature: 24–28°C during the day, with a slight nighttime drop
  • Humidity: Moderate to high (60–80%) with regular misting
  • Decor: Branches, cork bark, live or artificial plants, and elevated hides to encourage natural climbing behaviour

Feeding

These frogs are opportunistic insectivores and readily hunt a variety of live prey.

  • Diet: Crickets, roaches, locusts, waxworms, and other appropriately sized live insects
  • Feeding frequency:
    • Juveniles: Every 1–2 days
    • Adults: 2–3 times per week
  • Dust feeder insects regularly with calcium and vitamin supplements, and always provide fresh, dechlorinated water.

General Care

Yucatán Duck-Billed Frogs are hardy when maintained in the correct environment and are best appreciated as display animals.

  • Temperament: Calm, shy, and primarily nocturnal
  • Handling: Minimal handling recommended to protect their delicate skin and reduce stress
  • Lifespan: Around 8–12 years with proper care
  • Maintenance: Maintain good ventilation, regular misting, and a clean enclosure with stable temperatures and humidity
