Description
Orchid Mantis (Hymenopus coronatus)
The Orchid Mantis is one of the most beautiful and sought-after praying mantis species in the world. Famous for its stunning white and pink colouration, this remarkable insect mimics the appearance of an orchid flower, allowing it to ambush unsuspecting prey with incredible precision. Native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, the Orchid Mantis is a captivating display species for both beginner and experienced mantis keepers.
Habitat
Orchid Mantises thrive in warm, humid environments with plenty of vertical space for climbing and successful moulting.
- Enclosure: Tall, well-ventilated enclosure with ample climbing height
- Temperature: 24–30°C
- Humidity: 60–80% with regular light misting
- Decor: Twigs, branches, and live or artificial plants to provide climbing surfaces and natural cover
Feeding
An expert ambush predator, the Orchid Mantis patiently waits for prey before striking with remarkable speed.
- Diet: Fruit flies (for young nymphs), green bottle flies, house flies, small crickets, and other appropriately sized live insects
-
Feeding frequency:
- Nymphs: Every 1–2 days
- Adults: 2–3 times per week
- Remove uneaten prey during moulting periods to avoid injury or stress
General Care
Although slightly more sensitive than some mantis species, the Orchid Mantis thrives when provided with stable temperatures, humidity, and good ventilation.
- Temperament: Calm, alert, and primarily active during the day
- Handling: Minimal handling recommended due to their delicate nature
- Lifespan: Around 8–12 months depending on sex and care
- Maintenance: Ensure good airflow, maintain stable humidity, and provide plenty of vertical space for successful moulting
