The Papua Giant Mantis is a large and impressive praying mantis species, admired for its vibrant green colouration, powerful hunting ability, and confident nature. Native to the tropical forests of Papua, this fast-growing mantis is an exceptional display species, combining striking looks with fascinating predatory behaviour. Its hardy nature makes it suitable for both beginners and experienced mantis keepers.

Habitat

Native to the tropical rainforests of Papua, this species thrives in warm, humid conditions with plenty of vertical space for climbing and moulting.

  • Enclosure: Tall, well-ventilated enclosure with ample climbing height
  • Temperature: 24–30°C
  • Humidity: Moderate to high (60–80%) with regular light misting
  • Decor: Twigs, branches, live or artificial plants, and elevated perches for climbing and moulting

Feeding

A voracious ambush predator, the Papua Giant Mantis eagerly feeds on a wide variety of live insects.

  • Diet: Fruit flies (for young nymphs), green bottle flies, house flies, crickets, roaches, locusts, and other appropriately sized live insects
  • Feeding frequency:
    • Nymphs: Every 1–2 days
    • Adults: 2–3 times per week
  • Remove uneaten prey during moulting periods to prevent injury or stress

General Care

This is a hardy, fast-growing species that adapts well to captivity when provided with suitable environmental conditions.

  • Temperament: Alert, active, and confident
  • Handling: Can be handled gently, although it is best appreciated as a display animal
  • Lifespan: Around 10–14 months depending on sex and care
  • Maintenance: Ensure good ventilation, maintain consistent humidity, and provide sufficient height for successful moulting
