Description

Corn Snake (Pantherophis guttatus)

The Corn Snake is one of the most popular pet snakes in the world, loved for its generally calm temperament, beautiful colouration and inquisitive personality. Native to North America, these attractive snakes are known for their distinctive patterns, manageable adult size and relatively straightforward care requirements.

Available in an incredible variety of colours and morphs, Corn Snakes make fantastic pets for both beginners and experienced reptile keepers. Their active nature and willingness to explore make them particularly enjoyable to observe.

Habitat

Corn Snakes are primarily terrestrial but are excellent climbers and enjoy exploring their surroundings.

  • Enclosure: A secure, spacious vivarium with enough room for the snake to fully stretch out. Adult enclosures should generally be at least as long as the snake.

  • Warm Side: Approximately 28–30°C

  • Cool Side: Approximately 21–24°C

  • Humidity: Generally around 40–60%, with a humid hide available to assist shedding

  • Lighting: A consistent day/night cycle should be provided, with suitable low-level UVB beneficial

  • Decor: Multiple hides, cork bark, sturdy branches, logs and climbing opportunities provide enrichment

  • Water: Fresh drinking water should always be available

Corn Snakes are excellent escape artists, so all doors, vents and openings must be securely closed.

Feeding

Corn Snakes are carnivorous and generally develop an excellent feeding response.

  • Diet: Appropriately sized mice, with larger individuals occasionally requiring suitable larger rodents

  • Hatchlings/Juveniles: Generally fed every 5–7 days, depending on age, size and body condition

  • Adults: Usually fed every 10–14 days, adjusted according to body condition

  • Feeding Method: Frozen-thawed rodents are recommended

  • Prey Size: Should always be appropriate for the individual snake

  • Water: Fresh drinking water should always be available

Avoid handling for approximately 48 hours after feeding to allow proper digestion.

General Care

Corn Snakes are renowned for their hardy nature, inquisitive behaviour and generally manageable temperament.

  • Temperament: Usually calm, curious and docile

  • Handling: Generally tolerant of gentle, regular handling once settled

  • Adult Size: Commonly around 90–150cm

  • Lifespan: Approximately 15–20+ years with excellent care

  • Activity: Most active around dawn and dusk, although individuals may explore throughout the day

  • Housing: Best housed individually

  • Maintenance: Stable temperatures, regular cleaning, fresh water and appropriate feeding are essential

Young Corn Snakes can initially be nervous or flighty, but many become increasingly confident with age and gentle interaction.
