Description
Brazilian Blue Tarantula (Pterinopelma sazimai)
The Brazilian Blue Tarantula is one of the most spectacular and sought-after tarantulas in the hobby, famous for its stunning iridescent blue legs and sleek, dark body. Native to Brazil, this species is fast, terrestrial, and highly display-worthy, making it a true gem for advanced tarantula keepers.
Habitat
Found in the dry forests and scrublands of Brazil, the Brazilian Blue thrives in a terrestrial enclosure with plenty of floor space for burrowing.
- Enclosure: Terrestrial setup with depth for burrowing and hiding
- Substrate: Deep (10–15cm+) coco fibre, soil mix, or sand-soil combination
- Temperature: 24–28°C
- Humidity: Low to moderate (50–60%)
- Decor: Cork bark, half logs, and flat rocks for hides; minimal decor allows free movement
Feeding
A voracious predator, this species readily accepts live insects and is highly rewarding to observe during feeding.
- Diet: Crickets, roaches, locusts, and other appropriately sized insects
-
Feeding frequency:
- Juveniles: 2–3 times per week
- Adults: 1–2 times per week
- Uneaten prey should be removed promptly to prevent stress or injury
General Care
The Brazilian Blue is considered an advanced species due to its speed and defensive nature.
- Temperament: Fast, skittish, and can be defensive; excellent display species
- Handling: Not recommended; observe rather than interact
-
Lifespan:
- Females: 15+ years
- Males: 5–6 years
- Maintenance: Keep substrate dry with good ventilation; avoid excessive humidity
