Description

Brasil Ram (Mikrogeophagus brasiliensis) – A Beautiful and Peaceful South American Cichlid

The Brasil Ram (Mikrogeophagus brasiliensis), also known as the Brazilian Ram, is a colorful and peaceful dwarf cichlid native to the rivers and streams of Brazil. With its vibrant hues, including shades of blue, yellow, and red, this fish makes a striking addition to any freshwater aquarium. Its manageable size, peaceful temperament, and captivating colors make it an ideal choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists who wish to add a bit of brilliance to their tank.

The Brasil Ram is often recognized for its vivid blue-green body, complemented by yellow-orange markings on the head, chest, and fins. As with many cichlids, males tend to be slightly larger and more colorful than females, with the males often displaying more pronounced coloration and elongated fins, especially during the breeding season.

Key Features & Care Guidelines:

  • Vibrant Coloration: The Brasil Ram features a stunning palette of blue, green, yellow, and red, which intensifies during breeding or when the fish is in a relaxed and healthy environment. Males often develop brighter hues with more vivid orange-yellow coloration on the cheeks, while females are typically more subdued, though still very attractive with a lighter, golden tone.

  • Size & Growth: The Brasil Ram remains relatively small, typically growing to about 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) in length, making it ideal for smaller to medium-sized aquariums. Its small size and peaceful nature allow it to thrive in tanks as small as 20 gallons, though a 30-gallon tank or larger is recommended if you're keeping multiple individuals or want to create a more dynamic environment.

  • Peaceful Temperament: The Brasil Ram is one of the more peaceful species in the Mikrogeophagus genus. While it is a cichlid, it is much less aggressive than many of its larger cousins. It tends to coexist well with other non-aggressive fish, making it a great addition to a community tank. However, it is territorial during breeding, and males may display more dominant behavior, so it is best to provide them with plenty of hiding spots and territories within the aquarium.

  • Water Parameters: The Brasil Ram thrives in slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 and a temperature range of 75°F to 84°F (24°C to 29°C). They prefer soft to moderately hard water and enjoy stable conditions, so regular water changes and proper filtration are essential to maintaining their health. Since these fish originate from slow-moving, soft-water streams, replicating these conditions will help keep them in top condition.

  • Diet: Like most cichlids, the Brasil Ram is omnivorous and will accept a variety of foods. They thrive on a diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, and frozen or live foods, including brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. They also benefit from plant-based foods such as spirulina and blanched vegetables like zucchini and peas. A varied diet ensures they maintain their vibrant colors and overall health.

  • Tank Setup: A well-planted aquarium with a soft, sandy substrate is ideal for the Brasil Ram, as they enjoy sifting through the sand in search of food. Adding driftwood, rocks, and plants will provide hiding spots and territories, reducing stress and promoting natural behavior. While they prefer a moderate current, a gentle filtration system is best, as strong water movement can make them feel uneasy. Live plants like anubias, Java ferns, and cryptocorynes make excellent additions to the aquarium setup.

  • Breeding: The Brasil Ram is a substrate spawner and typically lays its eggs on flat surfaces such as rocks or leaves. The male displays bright coloration and dances to attract the female, who will lay the eggs in a protected area. Once the eggs hatch, the parents become very protective of their fry, guiding them through the tank and ensuring their safety from potential threats. Breeding can be a fascinating process to observe, and raising the fry can be a rewarding experience for the hobbyist.

  • Tank Mates: The Brasil Ram is a peaceful species that can be housed with a variety of other non-aggressive fish, including tetras, rasboras, small catfish, and snails. Avoid keeping them with larger or more aggressive fish, as this may cause stress and territorial disputes. Ideally, provide plenty of hiding spots and visual barriers to create a peaceful environment for all tank inhabitants.

  • Experience Level: The Brasil Ram is an excellent choice for beginner to intermediate aquarists. While they do require stable water conditions and a bit of attention to their tank setup, they are relatively easy to care for and adapt well to various aquarium conditions. Their peaceful nature, small size, and vibrant colors make them a popular choice for community tanks and peaceful aquascapes.

The Brasil Ram is an exceptional addition to any freshwater aquarium. Its striking appearance, peaceful disposition, and ease of care make it an ideal cichlid for aquarists of all levels. Whether you're a seasoned hobbyist or a beginner looking for a stunning fish to showcase in your tank, the Brasil Ram is sure to impress with its radiant colors and charming personality.
