Boxing Shrimp (Stenopus hispidus / Banded Coral Shrimp)
A striking and highly active marine invertebrate, the Boxing Shrimp—more commonly known as the Banded Coral Shrimp—is recognised by its bold red and white bands and its signature “boxing” front claws. It is both a functional cleaner and a visually engaging addition to reef aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive towards other shrimp. Best kept singly unless in a proven mated pair. Generally peaceful with fish and mixes well with clownfish, gobies, tangs, and wrasses. Avoid housing with other similar shrimp species unless carefully managed.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and most invertebrates. Provides a natural cleaning role within reef systems.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on leftover meaty foods, detritus, and biofilm. Will also accept mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and quality shrimp pellets. Feed 1–2 times daily if natural food is limited.

- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 60L
Care Level:
Easy to Moderate – hardy once acclimated but requires stable water conditions and rockwork for shelter and territory establishment.
Top Tip:
Provide plenty of caves and crevices to reduce territorial behaviour. Best kept as a single specimen or confirmed pair to avoid aggression between shrimp.
