Description
Blue Ribbon Eel (Rhinomuraena quaesita / Ribbon Eel)
A truly spectacular and exotic marine species, the Blue Ribbon Eel is renowned for its vivid electric-blue body, bright yellow dorsal fin, and ribbon-like appearance. One of the most striking fish available in the marine hobby, it is best suited to experienced aquarists due to its specialised care requirements.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive to predatory. Best kept with larger, peaceful tankmates such as tangs, angelfish, butterflyfish, and larger wrasses. Small fish, gobies, and ornamental crustaceans may be viewed as prey.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. Harmless to corals, but likely to consume small fish, shrimp, crabs, and other mobile invertebrates.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on small fish and crustaceans in the wild. Captive specimens often require careful feeding with silversides, lancefish, shrimp, squid, and other meaty marine foods. Newly imported individuals can be challenging to establish on prepared foods.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 500L
Care Level:
Advanced – requires excellent water quality, a mature aquarium, secure aquascaping, and considerable feeding expertise. Historically considered one of the more challenging eel species to maintain long-term.
Top Tip:
A completely escape-proof aquarium is essential, as Ribbon Eels are notorious escape artists and can fit through surprisingly small gaps. Choose specimens that are already feeding well whenever possible, as successful feeding is the key to long-term success.
