Description
Blue Eye Tang – Fiji (Ctenochaetus binotatus / Two-spot Bristletooth Tang)
A peaceful and highly useful algae-grazing marine fish, the Blue Eye Tang from Fiji is recognised by its brownish body, subtle striping, and distinctive blue-ringed eyes. It is an excellent choice for reef aquariums due to its constant grazing behaviour and generally calm temperament.
Compatibility:
Semi-peaceful. Generally mixes well with clownfish, wrasses, gobies, dwarf angelfish, and other tangs in suitably large systems. Can show mild territorial behaviour toward similar surgeonfish, especially in smaller aquariums.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Completely safe with corals and invertebrates, and highly beneficial for controlling algae and detritus in reef systems.
Diet:
Herbivore/Detritivore – constantly grazes film algae, detritus, and organic material from rockwork. Supplement with algae sheets, spirulina-based flakes or pellets, and vegetable-based marine foods. Feed 2–3 times daily.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 350L
Care Level:
Easy to Moderate – hardy once established, but requires a mature aquarium with stable water conditions and plenty of live rock for continuous grazing.
Top Tip:
Ideal for reef algae control. Provide a varied plant-based diet alongside natural rock grazing to keep the fish healthy and reduce territorial behaviour.
